Reading the table
Firmness is measured with a 50 lb weight on a 12-inch disc at the centre of a Queen mattress; the deeper the disc sinks, the softer the rating. Two mattresses with the same number can still feel different: foam feels like a slow hug, latex feels buoyant, coils feel springy. Height matters for sheets (anything 14 inches or taller needs deep-pocket fitted sheets) and for bunk beds (top bunks take 8 inches or less). If you are between two numbers, most people are happier one step softer for side sleeping and one step firmer for back or stomach sleeping. Toppers move a mattress about one point softer (Cloud 2-inch) or add support with slight softening (Terra 3-inch latex).
