The Nook Basic Foam Twin is our entry-level memory foam mattress and the one we recommend most often for bunk beds, day beds, trundles and guest rooms. It is 8 inches tall, so it fits under standard bunk guard rails, and it rates a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which most people describe as medium-firm.

The build is simple on purpose: a 2-inch layer of conventional memory foam over a 6-inch high-density support core. All foams are CertiPUR-US certified, made without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead or formaldehyde. The knit cover is removable and can be machine washed on cold.

Motion isolation is good for the price, and edge support is adequate for sitting to put on shoes but not for sleeping right on the edge. There is no dedicated cooling technology; the open-cell foam breathes reasonably well, but hot sleepers should look at the Haven Gel Memory Foam instead.
